Carrying Water
Carrying Water is an environmental code excerpted from Earth Connections: An Environmental Guide for Sustainable Living. Codes are pictures, stories, or events that reflect the learners' perspective and stimulate discussion -- what Freire calls a "codification" or a "code" of the learners' reality. Educators use the code to encourage learners to talk about locally identified development themes on health, clean water, and the environment. This resource also contains discussion questions to initiate critical thinking and critical consciousness when learners examine, analyze, and question information they identify from the code.
To learn more about using codes in instruction, see the online courses available on Literacy for Social Change. (For more materials pertaining to environmental codes, order Earth Connections by sending email to intl@proliteracy.org.)
