Being Literate Means Being Somebody: Practices from Mozambique

The authors describe the results of two studies from Mozambique on how literacy programs may be made more effective.

Based on participants' perspectives, the authors describe four reasons why literacy is important to them: family life, increasing family income, participating in society, and personal development. The authors also discuss barriers to participating in literacy programs and strategies some learners used to overcome them.
